Help Protect our Air!
The Obama administration has recently won a string of
very hard-fought court victories pushing back challenges
to strengthening the Clean Air Act. For Pennsylvanians, this finally means an opportunity to breathe
cleaner air. That is, if our state representatives don’t stand in the way. Every
year, Philadelphia suffers many poor air quality days where we’re
out of compliance with the Clean Air Act. A major contributing factor is pollution wafting over us
coming from coal-fired power plants located in Western PA.
Yesterday, our rep in the PA General Assembly, Cherelle Parker, voted for
House Resolution 815 petitioning the EPA to allow Pennsylvania to adopt “less stringent emissions standards
or a longer compliance schedule” for coal-fired power plants than the new EPA
guidelines call for. If this comes to pass, it will mean many
more years of dirty air for Philadelphia families, with serious health consequences including
more ER visits for children with asthma. To me, House Resolution
815 reads like it was drafted by the Coal Lobby, and I suspect it was.
This is very shortsighted thinking. I will be
contacting Ms. Parker’s office to express my disappointment. If you also find this vote objectionable, please
consider doing the same. You can use this web form to send an email to Representative Parker:

Eco Alley recap!
Eco Alley at Sunday's Garden Fest was super popular despite the rain! Folks had a great time watching Urban Drawl and dancing in the rain. Kiddie yoga was cancelled becasue of the rain but the lovely Dierdre Killkenny of Nature Yoga came by just in case the rain gave a reprieve.
Once the rain subsided festival goers perused the wares at Philadelphia Salvage, Ecoquette, Happy Cat Farms and Nexus Recycled Art.
Many thanks to Green Earth Gardens who created our beautiful entryway and to Valley Green Bank for allowing the bank to be the drop off point for books for the Book FreeCycle. Also a big thank you to the hard working GRinCH volunteers who sorted books for hours: Noreen Spota, Mansura Karim, Lee Meinicke, Linda Rauscher, Joan Martini and Zeta Cross. And a very special thank you to all of the citizens who gave a donation at the book FreeCycle and at Weird Waste Day last Saturday.
All doantions fund GRinCH's Green Warrior student grant program.

One More Tree-Cycling Event is Coming Up!
One More Tree-Cycling Event is Coming Up!
Very wintry weather made conditions less than optimal for community Christmas Tree Recycling events on Sunday. Roads were so icy in the morning that Chestnut Hill's event had to be cancelled. We chipped over 150 trees in East Mt. Airy, but we know lots of people weren't able to get there.
If you wanted to participate but couldn't because of weather/driving conditions, please don't trash that beautiful tree! Bring it to Awbury Arboretum on Saturday, January 11th, from 11:00 till 2:00, and it will be chipped into mulch that will enhance a public or community garden!
The entrance to Awbury Arboretum is on the east side of Chew Avenue, just south of Washington Lane, (near the SEPTA RR bridge). There will be signs to direct you to the drop-off site on the grounds.
All ornaments should be removed from your tree. No early drop-offs, please! We are requesting a $5 donation per tree, to help cover expenses & to support sustainability programs at both East Mt. Airy Neighbors & Awbury Arboretum.
We look forward to seeing you, & would appreciate your efforts to spread the word, & to help us keep trees out of landfills!
